The 63 semester hour program School Counseling program is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) and has “approved” status with the Georgia Professional Standards Commission. Counseling is a professional relationship that empowers diverse individuals, families, and groups to accomplish mental health, wellness, education, and career goals (American Counseling Association, 2010). The Counselor Education Program will train professional counselors who serve the mental health needs of the citizens of Georgia and the nation. The CACREP accredited College Counseling and Student Affairs specialty area is for professionals who will work in student affairs offices, including career centers, residential life, and college counseling programs. Coursework will touch on national policy, management theory, and the foundations of student affairs.
The question is not whether the degree is earned online or on campus, but whether it is properly accredited. The accreditor of postgraduate degrees in counseling, CACREP, accredits 72 online counseling degrees. While CACREP acknowledges that graduation from an accredited program does not guarantee licensure eligibility, most states recognize CACREP standards. After earning a master’s in counseling or equivalent from a CACREP-accredited degree program, aspiring LPCs must apply for licensure. Counseling certification and licensure is processed by state boards according to their own requirements, but generally necessitate completing an exam and a number of supervised postgraduate hours. Clinical Mental Health Counseling

None of the required Reynolda Campus courses are offered in a long-distance format or at night or on weekends. All classes for the Online Campus program are offered in a long-distance, online delivery format. This program prepares persons for counseling and advising positions in student service agencies in colleges and universities such as counseling center, advising office, career services, and diversity office. Established in 1946, with a foundation rooted in developmental theory, school counseling and career development, our program has evolved and emerged as an innovator of multicultural and social justice counseling. Our students go on to work as counselors in public and private schools; colleges and universities; community-based social service agencies; and private practice. The UAB Community Counseling Clinic provides individual and group counseling services to residents of Jefferson County. The clinic is also a training site for graduate counseling students fulfilling practicum and internship clinical requirements. We use state-of-the-art recording equipment for video counseling sessions — a practice that allows clinic supervisors not only to monitor and review sessions but also to provide essential feedback to trainees.
