How to Coach a Kid on the Autism Spectrum
Or, autism can be a pervasive developmental disorder that requires significant support. In parent training, individuals that provide care for a child may receive customized “curriculum” that best fit their situation. A typical area covered in parent training is teaching responsible adults pertinent ABA-based concepts to help adults understand the rationale behind interventions that are being used in their child’s ABA-based services. Another area covered in parent training is teaching adults specific skill acquisition programs and/or behavior management programs that they will implement during family time. Other areas covered in parent training may be data collection, how to facilitate maintenance, how to facilitate generalization of learned skills to name a few. Autism is a really heterogeneous condition, so it’s important for clinicians to know how somebody’s autism symptoms manifest when they are thinking about how to help them. And the symptoms will change over time — as a person grows up, one set of symptoms may disappear only to be replaced by another.
In addition, you can request a due process hearing from your state’s education department. A due process hearing is a legal proceeding where you can present evidence to show why your child needs an IEP. Advocating for your child’s rights to receive the support and services needed to succeed in school is vital.
“There are not enough psychologists trained to adequately support autistic people, particularly adults,” Bal said. Instead, many psychologists will often refer autistic adults to practitioners with expertise in autism who usually have exceptionally long waitlists. Men are about four times as likely to be diagnosed with ASD than women.
Why weren’t you diagnosed earlier?
This is the hardest part – truly stay quiet and listen to what they have to say. Let them tell you what they think, what they know about autism and how they feel about it all.

Occupational therapists can help you find ways to avoid sensory overload. However, medical treatment may be needed if behaviors are causing undue disruption, or any risk of self-harm or harm to others. Ensuring the right amount of sensory input—not too much and not too little—is important to the physical and emotional well-being of a child or adult who experiences sensory overload.
For example, repetitive motor behaviors might diminish after childhood, but be replaced by anxiety or depression in adolescence or adulthood. Children with autism often have difficulty with language and communication.
Dr. Iyengar recommends the following tips when addressing the topic with your child or on their behalf. For adults, during an assessment, you’ll be asked to fill a questionnaire about developmental problems you might have experienced over the years. If available, they might also ask to speak to someone who knew them as a child, as it’s most likely that the condition developed in childhood and persisted into adulthood. Further evaluation will include speaking to a doctor specializing in child development or a child psychologist who specializes in brain development.
You’ll hear about this spectrum often; in fact, it’s so common that the diagnosis is now referred to as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Depending on the circumstances, SSA may also consider the stepparent’s income and assets if the kid is cohabitating with that person (or an adoptive parent and a stepparent). This is also done while a student is away at school but is under their parents’ supervision while at home for the weekend, on vacation, or during the summer. While Social Security considers child support received on behalf of a disabled child to be unearned income, only two-thirds of the monthly amount is considered for determining eligibility for a disability subsidy.
That’s because their Autism isn’t as apparent, which would make an interviewer, for example, put off by the fact that the job candidate wasn’t making eye contact or wouldn’t shake their hand. Those with mild cases of Autism can also feel reluctant to share their diagnoses with new people, hoping that they’ll be treated like everyone else as a result, and that, sometimes, is part of the cause for the miscommunication. The following step is a $20 deduction from either the parents’ earned income or their total income if there is no unearned income. After that, Social Security takes $65 out of the parent’s earned income and cuts the remainder in half. If the child resides with just one parent, Social Security subtracts the federal SSI benefit rate ($841) for an individual. If the child lives with both parents or one parent and a stepparent, SSA deducts the rate for a couple ($1261).
By 1 p.m, we were ready to venture out on some quiet, familiar roads where there was minimal traffic. When learning to drive, it is imperative that everything be broken down into small tasks. It might take longer for someone to learn to drive, but a person should be able to take as long as they need to learn. I still didn’t know I was autistic, but I felt ready to take to the roads again.
