If your sofa will be up against a wall, please take into consideration the pitch of the sofa, or how far back the sofa leans. Most high-quality sofas have some sort of pitch, but if it’s too great, the sofa is pushed into the room, eating up valuable space. I don’t have to tell you, Gentle Readers, that buying a sofa is a BIG DEAL. Unless you have a wonderful interior designer to guide you (ahem), it may be helpful to know a few things about what kind of sofa will look best in your space. The top cushions on my couch had a bit of fancy folding around the corners that I had to try to copy on the new fabric. Make sure the sofa base sits level and then leave to dry. To attach them, I made a 4 holes in the bottom of the sofa base. To make the hole I used an awl first (making very sure I didn’t go all the way through the foam board), and then the thinner end of my scissors to make the hole big enough for the legs. That way, your investment will last longer, and your base pieces will continue to work with evolving decor trends and your changing preferences. Upholstery that’s stained, torn or a material or color you don’t like is good enough reason to get a new bed. And for many people, getting a new bed frame is about upgrading to a larger size. The least expensive (and least durable) options don’t have springs and only use webbing or mesh. Avoid these couches if your goal is a quality piece of furniture. If you’re buying a recliner sofa, make sure it is comfortable in all its positions. The couch back should support your back adequately with your feet flat on the floor and the backs of your knees just slightly forward of the lower seat cushion. And if you like to nap on the couch, lay down on the couch and see if it is long enough for comfortable snoozing.

Use circular motions and make sure you get every nook, cranny and crease of the couch. Even if you removed the pretty styling, the sofa rug and pillows are still way ahead of the look we would have with everything matching the sofa. And don’t forget about pattern in your drapes or rug, that’s always a great way to add interest. Without a professional designer involved, it will be hard to achieve the expertly styled room anytime soon.
